Glenissimo Bassoon Reeds
Bassoon reeds are a very personal thing. Every bassoonist has their own unique way of producing a sound because everyone is different. Embouchures vary, not least because no two mouths are the same and effective “support” for the notes can be a real challenge, particularly for beginners and intermediate players.
Even with a well honed diaphragm that supports well, some players prefer light manageable reeds and others a good work out. Chuck the infinite variety of bassoons, crooks, fingerings and repertoire into the mix and it becomes apparent that the first rule of the perfect bassoon reed is that there is no perfect bassoon reed.
Fortunately we all have to start somewhere and in our early years the most important thing is a reed that works. A bassoon reed that produces a good stable sound and allows accurate intonation with minimal complications. A reed that allows us to get on with playing the bassoon and perform or take exams, without added stress.
By using my pupils as guinea pigs, I have developed a style of reed that is appropriate for beginners and intermediates players. Some of my reeds require a bit more effort and are ideal for advanced players who can support a larger dynamic range and a stronger sound.
